The Winged Victory of Samothrace, also called the Nike of Samothrace, It is a marble Hellenistic sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike (Victory)

Nike of Samothrace is a marble statue which depicts a graceful, robed female icon. The statue has lost both arms, and her head. In Greek mythology, Nike was a goddess who personified triumph and victory.

This statue was discovered in 1863 on the island of Samothrace in the northern Aegean Sea, and is also called "The Statue of Samothrace".

It was only broken pieces at the earliest, and it was able to stand up again after many years of repair, but still lacked head and arms (only one arm was found in 1950).

Nike is the goddess of victory in Greek mythology. Legend has it that she helped the gods of Olympus to defeat the giant Titan, bringing victory to people. In Western art, it often appears as a figure with wings, olive branches, and laurel branches, holding a harp to sing carols.

The statue was originally placed on a stone cliff on the beach of Samothrace.

The statue of the goddess of victory was excavated in 1863 on the Greek island of Samothrace by the French vice-consul and amateur archaeologist Charles Champoiseau.

The offering of a statue of Nike perched on a ship was a religious act in honor of these gods. It has also been suggested that this monument was dedicated by the Rhodians in commemoration of a specific naval victory.

The goddess of Victory (Nike, in Greek) is shown in the form of a winged woman standing on the prow of a ship, braced against the strong wind blowing through her garments. With her right hand cupped around her mouth, she announced the event she was dedicated to commemorate. The colossal work was placed in a rock niche that had been dug into a hill; it overlooked the theater of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods. This niche may also have contained a pool filled with water in which the ship appeared to float. Given its placement, the work was meant to be viewed from the front left-hand side; this explains the disparity in sculpting technique, the right side of the body being much less detailed. The highly theatrical presentation-combined with the goddess's monumentality, wide wingspan, and the vigor of her forward-thrusting body-reinforces the reality of the scene.

The Winged Victory of Samothrace is one of the masterpieces of Hellenistic sculpture.

This style of double-girding a woman’s tunic was popular in the fourth century BC. Over her tunic she wears a himation (mantle), which covers her right leg and is blown against her body by the imaginary force of the sea wind. The feathered wings of the goddess are spread as if in full flight.

The goddess of victory is 2.44 meters tall. Although the head and arms of the goddess have been lost, it is still considered to be a highly artistic masterpiece of ancient Greek sculptors. From any angle, the viewer can see and feel the grandeur of the goddess of victory.
